Read pages 67 - 73 from the Desk Reference. Answer the following questions and post them on the Discussion Board:
1. What did you learn from the case study of Yuri (page 68)?
2. What does mastering English mean and why is it so important? Name at least 5 reasons and reflect on some of them.
3. Reflect on things you do to master your English. Do you take any language classes? How do you use English outside of home?
How do you make sure you don't "plateau"?
4. What are the eight foundational tips for building stronger English skills? Choose two or three and comment on them.
5. What is your understanding of clear pronunciation after reading Section 2? Why is clear pronunciation so important?
6. What are the eight features of pronunciation Paul Holmes discusses in this week's reading? Choose a few and comment on
them.
7. Why is it so important to ask for clarification? What are the seven steps for seeking clarification? Do people in your culture ask
for clarifications?
8. Respond to the following scenario:
Some of your colleagues speak the same first language you do. When you get tired or want to save time, you switch to your
first language to communicate with them. You know that it's not going to to offend people in your office who don't speak
your first language because you are not speaking about them!
