Read pages 61 - 66 from the Desk Reference. Answer the following questions and post them on the Discussion Board:
1. What is power distance in the Canadian workplace and why understanding power is important?
2. Reflect on the three ways of enhancing your influence and control.
3. What is your understanding of the term life-time learner?
4. What is knee-jerk reaction? Do you find it difficult to control your emotions when you feel frustrated with your new workplace
culture? Are you good at suspending judgement and looking at the situation without emotion? Share your examples and
experiences.
5. What are the elements of credibility and what are the ways to build credibility?
6. Analyze Table 3.5 on High Power Distance and Low Power Distance on page 63. Reflect on your personal experiences related
to these concepts.
7. Even though gift giving is a universal human norm, what are the unspoken rules of gift giving in the Canadian workplace? How
are they different from your home culture?
8. What is your understanding of the term initiative? How does Paul Holmes define it in the Desk Reference? Do you come
from a hierarchical culture where employees don't take initiative?
